About Me

Growing up in Chidlow, a small semi-rural town inland of Perth, I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Western Australia, moving to New Zealand in 2007 to complete an Honours in statistics at Massey University in Palmerston North. After a year living and working in Maryland, USA, I returned to Massey U to undertake my doctoral studies. I finished writing my Ph.D. thesis - Spatial and Spatiotemporal Point Process Modelling in Epidemiology - in 2011, joining the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Otago here in Dunedin in 2012.

Outside the office, I’m a husband to Andrea with whom I share our daughters Quinn and Saskia, alongside a domestic house cat named Sigma. I’m a keen gamer from way back and so when the former allow me (usually way after bedtime) I’ve recently been spending a lot of time in a VR headset fending off various undesirables such as Arizona’s finest zombies, or the Combine. I enjoy classic Simpsons/Family Guy/American Dad episodes, and whilst Arnold Schwarzenegger is my action hero of preference, I will also permit myself to be entertained by artists such as Stallone, Van Damme, and Seagal (yes, yes, I know, but his early stuff was great). Figuring out the intricacies of 3D printing on my Ender 3 V2 is a fun if not somewhat frustrating hobby, I am always finding questionable new DIY skills to pick up around the house, and in a desperate attempt to be more cultured I’m trying to teach myself some classical pieces on the piano, much to my wife’s irritation, daughters’ amusement, and cat’s indifference.

Important research afoot.
